You know you’ve stumbled onto something brilliant, when two things happen, one right after the other 1.) Your response is to have to fight your instinct to squeal like a pig in excitement and 2.) You then want to kick yourself for not thinking of it first.

And well, that pretty much sums up my reaction to the website, What Would Zooey Deschanel Wear?

First some background: Zooey is easily one of my top fashion muses. Whether on her show “The New Girl” or in real life for various appearances, she always gets it right. Her formula for style success seems to mainly revolve around a vintage or vintage-looking dress with a nipped in waist and some sort of delicate looking pattern. Sometimes she shows a little cleav, but usually the look is more prim/quirky than overtly sexy. Other times, she’ll put on cute cardigans and little, brightly colored skirts that are either short or knee length. Then there’s the Zooey hair, usually tumbling lose in waves, and if she’s in character as Jess, there are her geek girl glasses which seem to enhance rather than detract from her blue, pretty peepers.

So recently, after watching a new episode of “The New Girl” in which Jess was wearing a country-doll-looking, yellow dress, I Googled “Zooey Deschanel New Girl Season 2 Yellow Dress.” And voila! A website showcasing all Zooey, all the time, in different outfit photos, popped up. Upon closer inspection, I saw that each outfit post, if clicked on, offered details about the context in which it was worn (acting role, talk show interview, etc.) and where to buy it! If the dress was vintage, the website would offer suggestions for similar items along with links if you want to purchase those, too. (Naturally, there’s plenty of Modcloth and Anthropologie!)

Now, according to a disclaimer at the bottom of the page, WWZDW was created by a fan and it’s not in any way affiliated with Zooey. I’d give credit to that fan here, but there doesn’t seem to be any information identifying the site’s creator, nor is there a way to leave feedback unless it’s to suggest similar outfits to what Zooey’s wearing in one of the pics. The only thing I could find out about the publisher is that she (seriously, I doubt it’s a he) also has a similar site devoted to the style of Taylor Swift.

It, too, makes for some fun scrolling, though the Zooey one is already my new favorite.

Anyway here’s my latest illustration, inspired by 10 different Zooey Deschanel looks I found on the website. It was done in watercolor, pen and Photoshop and it was lots of fun to do, though surprisingly more work than you’d think something so teeny would be!
